Are strikeout props a good bet?

Strikeout props are among the fairest-priced props measured on an MLB board. Close to fair is not the same as fair on the line in front of you.

Pitcher strikeout props are the rare player prop that grades out close to fair. Checked against real strikeout counts over the archived window, betting the over at the best posted price returned about -4.5% per bet across 2,061 props. For comparison, anytime home run props graded out around -23% over the same window, far outside their noise floor. As props go, strikeouts are about as honestly priced as it gets.

Which strikeout lines are priced worst?

On 2,061 props the strikeout over returned about -4.5% per bet, and for the first time that figure clears its noise floor. The common lines all lean negative - about -5% on the 3.5 lines, -6% on the 4.5s and -7% on the 5.5s, each inside its own floor - while the thin 2.5 and 6.5 buckets bounce positive on samples too small to mean anything. The sample now supports the sign and, narrowly, the size; the ordering between lines it still cannot settle.

Is the under the better side?

It has been the cheaper side, but not by an amount this sample can size. Across the same 2,061 props the under at the best posted price returned about -3.6% per bet against the over's -4.5%. Why are strikeout props fairer than other props?

Strikeout totals sit near even money, outside the longshot price band where the house edge runs thickest. A strikeout line also draws real two-sided action - unders get bet, not just overs - which keeps the number closer to honest. A home run prop is the opposite on both counts: a longshot price and one-sided action.

What decides a strikeout prop?

The matchup, mostly: how often the opposing lineup swings and misses, how deep the starter tends to go into the game, and whether an early hook is likely.
